Portland, Maine (FluxDaily) — Following a recent ICE operation that led to fear and uncertainty among immigrant communities in Maine, Governor Janet Mills explicitly demanded that federal immigration officials disclose arrest warrants, provide real-time updates on apprehensions, and share basic information about detained individuals.

“If they have warrants, show the warrants. In America, we don’t believe in secret arrests or secret police,” Mills asserted during a news conference. The operation, which reportedly began this week, has left state officials unable to ascertain the locations or statuses of those detained.

Despite attempts to contact the office of President Donald Trump, Mills indicated that she had not received responses concerning the enforcement effort impacting approximately 1,400 individuals, with about 50 arrests reported in the first day alone.

Amidst ongoing confrontations in Minnesota involving ICE agents, criticisms have mounted against the agency regarding its operational approach nationwide. Demonstrations in Minnesota were particularly heightened following an incident leading to the fatal shooting of a civilian.

The enforcement surge has particularly affected immigrant populations in Portland and Lewiston, where community leaders reported that families have been prompted to stay indoors, avoid work, and remove children from school due to fears of detention.

Mills further questioned the reasoning behind targeting Maine, emphasizing that local reports indicate many individuals affected are not engaged in criminal activities. She expressed concern regarding the operational tactics of federal agents who are purportedly apprehending individuals based on unfounded allegations.

With Maine's school districts on heightened alert due to the enforcement activities, some reports indicate local schools temporarily locked down during the operation. Maine’s top federal prosecutor has since urged for peaceful demonstrations but has cautioned against interference with federal operations.

As state officials await further clarification from federal agencies, the call for transparency presents a significant discourse on the implications of immigration enforcement within vulnerable communities in Maine.
