WASHINGTON (AP) — The ongoing government shutdown is taking a severe mental toll on the nation’s military families, as they grapple with week-to-week uncertainties regarding their paychecks.
Alicia Blevins, a Marine spouse, shared her decision to see a therapist due to the ongoing strain and anxiety. “I don’t feel like I have the tools to deal with this,” she divulged, expressing concern for her husband’s well-being amid these challenges.
Despite attempts by the Trump administration to ensure troop payments during the shutdown that began on October 1, worries persist. Without clear communication, both payments have been delayed until just days before payday, leading to heightened anxiety among military families.
Recent actions by President Donald Trump to authorize fund reallocations from existing accounts appear to offer temporary relief; however, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent indicated that by mid-November, the military could face delays in compensation without a resolution in sight.
Families Feel Forgotten
The prevailing sentiment among military families is one of frustration. Jennifer Bittner, whose husband is in the Army, remarked, “You have to be thought of to be used as a pawn,” criticizing the lack of consideration for military members in Congress’s decision-making.
As stress mounts, families are facing additional financial hurdles, including rising healthcare costs and disruptions to their routines due to the shutdown. The Military Family Advisory Network reported that many active-duty troops live paycheck to paycheck, intensifying these difficulties as relief measures struggle to catch up with the immediate needs of families.
Moreover, for reservists, weekend drill pay has been canceled amid the shutdown, leading to significant financial impact as they rely on these funds for everyday expenses.
To combat the ensuing challenges, programs providing emergency grocery support have been initiated, illustrating the growing need for assistance among military families. Blevins noted their receipt of such support as a critical lifeline during these tumultuous times.
As military families continue to navigate these uncertainties, many are looking for effective communication and resolutions from their leaders to alleviate their burdens and restore a sense of stability amidst the turbulence of the current political climate.
