WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) — William Stevenson, who was previously married to Jill Biden, is currently being held in jail on serious first-degree murder charges after the unfortunate death of his wife, Linda Stevenson. The tragic event took place at their Delaware residence on December 28, where Linda was discovered unresponsive by police, leading to unsuccessful life-saving efforts.

Stevenson, 77, has not been able to meet his bail set at $500,000. The details surrounding the incident are still under investigation, with authorities yet to disclose a motive for the alleged murder.

Reports indicate that police responded to a domestic dispute at approximately 11 p.m. that night, resulting in the grim discovery. A grand jury indictment was issued against Stevenson following weeks of investigation by the Delaware Department of Justice. It remains unclear if he is currently being represented by an attorney.

William Stevenson was married to Jill Biden from 1970 to 1975 before she wed Joe Biden, who served as president from January 2021 to January 2025. A spokesperson for the Biden family stated that Jill Biden declined to comment on the matter.

Linda Stevenson operated a bookkeeping business and was acknowledged in her obituary as a devoted mother and grandmother, as well as a fan of the Philadelphia Eagles. Curiously, her obituary did not reference her husband.

Additionally, it’s notable that Stevenson historically founded the Stone Balloon, a popular music venue in Newark, Delaware during the early 1970s.

In a 2024 interview, Stevenson expressed negative sentiments towards Jill Biden, characterizing their divorce as contentious and labeling her as bitter and nasty.
