Final Fugitive Captured: Louisiana Inmate's 5-Month Run Ends in Atlanta

After five months of evading capture, the last of the inmates from the Orleans Parish Justice Center escape in May has been detained. Derrick Groves was taken into custody in Atlanta following a brief standoff with authorities, who resolved the situation by deploying gas canisters into a residence where he was hiding.
This mass escape incident saw ten inmates make their way out of the facility through a newly created hole in the wall that was made by dismantling a toilet. Officials stated that Groves and his fellow escapees then managed to navigate across a highway before dispersing.

Messages carved into the wall above the exit hole referenced the ease of their escape and taunted the authorities, with one reading 'To Easy LoL.' Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson acknowledged the escape highlighted staffing challenges and architectural flaws within the prison system.
Shortly after the escape, three inmates were recaptured, followed by others in the ensuing weeks. Groves was located thanks to a tip that led to his hiding spot in Atlanta. Initially believed absent, he was eventually found in a concealed crawl space, demonstrating deliberate efforts to avoid capture.
After being convicted for his involvement in a deadly shooting, Groves is now facing additional charges related to the escape. Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill has pledged to ensure he faces the full extent of the law, with Groves set for extradition back to Louisiana.
