Antonio Brown, the former NFL player known for his contentious career and off-field incidents, is slated to return to Miami after waiving his right to contest extradition from New Jersey. Brown faces charges related to an attempted murder from an incident following a celebrity boxing match in May.
Brown, 37, was arrested by U.S. Marshals in Dubai and brought to Essex County Jail in New Jersey. Officials confirmed that he decided to waive extradition during a brief court appearance, and currently, he awaits transfer to Florida authorities.
The arrest warrant reveals accusations of Brown grabbing a handgun from a security staff member and firing two shots at a man involved in a prior fistfight. The victim, identified as Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu, later reported that one of the bullets grazed his neck. Disturbing cellphone footage corroborates the claims, showcasing Brown advancing towards the victim with the firearm.
Initially, there was a delay in arresting Brown, as the police did not recognize Nantambu as a victim until later. Following the incident, Brown described on social media that he acted in self-defense, claiming he was assaulted by a group trying to steal his jewelry.
Should he be convicted of the second-degree attempted murder charge in Florida, he could face up to 15 years in prison and hefty fines. The former NFL star played for various teams, achieving numerous accolades throughout his career, including a vital role in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' Super Bowl victory.
Brown's legal troubles are not new; he has struggled with various legal issues over the years, and this recent incident adds another chapter to his tumultuous story.
