Brazilian law enforcement has uncovered a plot to assassinate President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, which allegedly took place shortly before he assumed office in 2022. This shocking revelation came to light on Tuesday when authorities arrested multiple members of an elite military unit implicated in the scheme designed to maintain Jair Bolsonaro's power after losing the presidential election.According to a police spokesperson who requested anonymity, four of those arrested were active military personnel, including a former senior aide to Bolsonaro. A fifth individual, identified as a federal police officer, was also detained. The suspects were said to have leveraged their military expertise to prepare an assassination attempt against Lula, as well as his vice-presidential nominee, Geraldo Alckmin, slated for December 15, 2022. There were also unspecified threats against a Supreme Court justice that authorities disclosed during their investigation.Police statements indicated that the planning process involved intricate details regarding human and military resources essential for executing the attacks. In response to the claims, Bolsonaro’s attorney vehemently denied any involvement, stating that his client had no knowledge of such a malicious plot and had never partaken in or consented to any conspiratorial actions. While police have not provided evidence that the sinister plan was halted or abandoned, the arrests have reignited discussions about the fragility of Brazil's democracy and the extremes some factions may consider in the pursuit of political power.
