China's most advanced aircraft carrier, the Fujian, has entered service days after a grand commissioning ceremony overseen by Chinese leader Xi Jinping, state media reported.
The Fujian, the country's third warship, is equipped with electromagnetic catapults that allow for more rapid plane launches.
This launch signifies a crucial step for Beijing, now boasting the largest navy by sheer numbers globally.
The rapid expansion of China's navy has applied increasing pressure on the United States and its allies to enhance their military readiness.
The Fujian’s capabilities include launching three different types of aircraft, thanks to its electromagnetic catapult and flat flight deck. The domestically developed vessel can accommodate heavier weaponry and fuel, enabling strikes on enemy targets from considerable distances, making it more powerful than its predecessors, the Liaoning and the Shandong.
State media highlighted the Fujian as a major milestone in advancing China’s naval capabilities. The United States remains the only other nation with an aircraft carrier utilizing electromagnetic catapult technology similar to that of the Fujian.
The commissioning ceremony took place in Hainan province, where Xi toured the ship, gathering performance details directly from the crew. Reports suggested that Xi was instrumental in the decision to implement electromagnetic catapult technology.
During the ceremony, sailors lined up along the flight deck, saluting in unison while chanting, Follow the party's command, fight to win, and uphold fine conduct!
