Australian PM Issues Apology After Controversial Comment on Kylie Minogue

The Australian Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, released a statement apologising "unequivocally" for remarks he made on the Bush Deep podcast. In the interview, comedian Nikki Osborne asked the PM to categorize celebrities Kylie Minogue, Nicole Kidman and Rhonda Burchmore in a “shag, marry or date” scenario. Albanese replied: “Oh, Kylie, clearly.” The comment was immediately met with backlash, with several parliamentarians calling it “entirely inappropriate” and “disrespectful to women.”

MP Zali Steggall described the remarks as overtly sexist and urged the PM to lead by example. Shadow Communications Minister Sarah Henderson posted that the comments were embarrassing to Australians and demeaned the office of Prime Minister. Albanese’s comment came after he and his partner, Jodie Haydon, had married earlier that year. He added that the government remains committed to elevating women in society.
