A man has been arrested in connection with a deadly car bomb attack that killed eight people and wounded 20 others in Delhi last week, authorities have said.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) stated that the car used in the attack, deemed a 'terrorist incident' by the government, was registered in the suspect's name. The arrested individual is reportedly from Indian-administered Kashmir.

The explosion occurred near a metro station close to the Red Fort, a prominent cultural landmark in Delhi, during a time of heavy traffic.

The NIA has seized another vehicle connected to the incident for forensic investigation and has interrogated over 73 witnesses, including several injured by the blast.

This significant explosion marks the first of its kind in Delhi since 2011. The attack happened around 18:52 local time when a slow-moving white Hyundai i20 detonated at a busy traffic light.

Home Minister Shah confirmed the explosion was linked to this vehicle shortly after the incident.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the situation as a 'conspiracy,' with commitments made by the government to bring all involved parties to justice.

Police investigations are also exploring links to recent arrests in Kashmir and a substantial cache of explosives seized near Delhi.

The Red Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage site that attracts a considerable number of tourists daily and serves as a historic backdrop for major national events.
