In brief

Brazil's legal authorities have initiated action against ex-President Jair Bolsonaro, indicating his involvement in alleged plans to orchestrate a coup after losing the contentious 2022 election. The accusations signal a significant escalation of Bolsonaro's legal struggles and raise questions about his attempts to maintain power.

On November 21, 2024, Brazilian authorities announced that they were recommending criminal charges against Bolsonaro for his participation in a concerted effort to disrupt the democratic process following his narrow loss to current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Bolsonaro, a far-right figure, had propagated claims of election fraud after his defeat. The Brazilian federal police recommended prosecutors pursue charges against Bolsonaro along with thirty-six other associates for serious offenses including “violent abolition of the democratic rule of law, coup d’état and criminal organization.” However, specific details regarding Bolsonaro's direct actions leading to these serious allegations have yet to be revealed. This announcement comes shortly after the arrest of four individuals from an elite military unit, including a former close aide to Bolsonaro, who were implicated in planning actions against Lula prior to his inauguration in January 2023. In addition to the coup charges, Bolsonaro is already facing criminal accusations in two separate cases regarding attempts to alter his Covid-19 vaccination records and an alleged scheme to misappropriate jewelry received from foreign dignitaries during his presidency.
