In brief

Amid reports of an intern sabotaging its AI project, ByteDance clarifies the situation, assuring that its AI capabilities remain intact and that the allegations of significant damage are overstated.

ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, has fired an intern accused of "maliciously interfering" with the training of one of its artificial intelligence (AI) models. While the company has acknowledged the incident, it has disputed claims regarding the extent of the disruption caused by the unnamed intern, labeling many reports as exaggerated and inaccurately portrayed. In a statement, ByteDance clarified that the intern, who was part of its commercialization technology team, had no experience with the AI Lab operations and emphasized that the integrity of its commercial online operations, including its extensive language AI models, remained unaffected. The incident raised eyebrows as it was reported that the disruption could have led to damages exceeding $10 million, primarily from interrupting a complex AI training system reliant on a vast array of powerful graphics processing units (GPU). ByteDance refuted these claims and confirmed that its AI training systems continued to function without any negative consequences. In response to the situation, ByteDance indicated it had taken additional steps by notifying the intern's university and relevant industry organizations. The Chinese tech giant continues to heavily invest in AI technologies, which are employed not only in its popular Doubao ChatGPT-like generative AI model but also across other applications, including the innovative text-to-video tool known as Jimeng.
