In brief
On the night of Saturday, a commuter vehicle overturned near Lal wa Sarjangal district in western Afghanistan, resulting in five fatalities and 16 injuries. The incident, reported by Bakhtar News Agency and relayed by Xinhua, comes amid a spate of recent road accidents across the country.
On Saturday night, a passenger vehicle overturned on a road near the outskirts of Lal wa Sarjangal district in western Afghanistan’s Ghor province, killing five people and injuring 16, officials said. The crash, reported by Bakhtar News Agency, came in the early hours of Nov. 8 and was later confirmed by Xinhua. Local authorities, including government official Abdullah Fayeez, described the incident as a sudden loss of control that flipped the vehicle over.
The vehicle was travelling along the main road that connects the district capital to the provincial capital of Ghor, a route frequently used by commuters and traders. Witnesses said the driver lost control abruptly, possibly due to a sharp bend or mechanical failure, and the sedan tumbled onto its side before coming to rest on a rocky slope.
Abdullah Fayeez, quoted by Bakhtar, said the authorities had begun a preliminary investigation and that medical teams were dispatched to the scene to treat the wounded. He added that the deceased were "commuters" who were travelling to a market in the district, though their identities were not yet released.
"The vehicle lost control and flipped over, killing five commuters," stated Abdullah Fayeez in a statement.
City officials confirmed that emergency responders reached the site within 20 minutes of the reported collision. First responders, including paramedics and police, worked to extricate passengers from the wreckage and provide initial medical care before transporting the injured to the nearest hospital in the city of Lal wa Sarjangal.
The incident marks the sixth road accident in Afghanistan over the past three days, according to the Ministry of Interior. In 2024, the country had recorded an average of 28 fatalities per month in traffic incidents, a figure that has fluctuated in recent years due to seasonal road closures and security concerns.
Local media reported that the weather in Ghor province during early November can be unpredictable, with sudden showers and slippery road conditions contributing to driver hardships. However, no official investigation has yet determined the precise cause of the vehicle’s loss of control, and authorities have not released details about the vehicle’s maintenance or the driver’s condition.
The Governor’s office in Ghor province issued a statement calling for heightened attention to road safety, especially along rural routes that lack proper signage or guardrails. The statement also urged commuters to heed weather advisories and maintain safe speeds during rainy periods.
As of now, the identities of the five deceased and the sixteen injured remain confidential, with families waiting for further updates from local hospitals and the Ministry of Interior. The investigation into the crash is ongoing, and no conclusive findings regarding the fault of the driver or the vehicle’s mechanical status have been released so far.
Uncertainties remain about the exact cause of the vehicle’s loss of control, the condition of the road at the point of the crash, and whether mechanical failure or driver error played a role. Additionally, details about the vehicle’s maintenance history or the health of its passengers are not yet available, leaving several key questions unanswered.
