In brief

In a landmark event, the Magic Circle in London welcomed back Sophie Lloyd, who three decades ago disguised herself to gain membership and was subsequently expelled. This evening was dedicated to rectifying past mistakes and honoring Lloyd's legacy.

In a momentous occasion for the British Magic Society, Sophie Lloyd, the first female magician to gain membership, was finally inducted back into the Magic Circle on Thursday night, an event that recognizes an oversight spanning nearly thirty years. Members gathered to both commemorate Lloyd’s unique journey and to offer a long-overdue apology for her initial dismissal. Back in March 1991, when the Magic Circle was exclusively for men, Lloyd disguised herself as “Raymond Lloyd” to gain entry into the prestigious group. Once her true identity was unveiled, coinciding with the society's decision to start admitting women, Lloyd was immediately expelled, her contributions forgotten. However, after years of being an almost mythical figure in the realm of magic, she was rediscovered in a public search initiated by the Circle last November. Maddie Spencer, a current member, expressed her marvel at the ruse, stating, “It was an incredible achievement to fool so many magicians.” To make the evening special, the Society planned a celebratory performance for Lloyd, recognizing that mere words couldn’t suffice for such a significant act of restoration. As the president of the Magic Circle, Marvin Berglas, stated during the ceremony, “Tonight, we do what we should have done long ago.” The acknowledgment heralds a new era for the Magic Circle, ensuring that the talents of women are not only recognized but celebrated within the magical arts.
