In brief

In a poignant display of emotion, families in the West Bank celebrate the release of Palestinian prisoners in exchange for hostages, highlighting both the jubilation and grief intertwined in these events.

Palestinians gathered in the West Bank city of Ramallah on Thursday to celebrate the return of over 100 Palestinian prisoners released from Israeli detention as part of a hostage exchange deal. The atmosphere was electric with anticipation as families awaited the arrival of their loved ones who had endured long sentences, some exceeding 20 years. Among the crowd was Samar Faisal, whose brother was among those freed. “I can hardly believe this is happening,” she said through shivers of excitement punctuated by the evening chill. Her brother had been imprisoned for his affiliation with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, a group classified as a terrorist organization by several Western nations. Thursday's releases marked the third prisoner exchange amid a cease-fire agreement between Israel and Hamas, during which Hamas committed to releasing at least 33 hostages in return for over 1,500 Palestinians. As the sun set, a convoy of buses approached the designated meeting spot, igniting a wave of joy and relief among the assembled families.Within the jubilant crowd, Alaa Zubeidi stood clad in mourning attire, her heart heavy for her late son, Mohammad, killed in a drone strike. She awaited news of her husband, Zakariya Zubeidi, a former militant and artist who had drawn attention for escaping an Israeli prison. The tension overshadowing the joyful occasion lifted when Mr. Zubeidi was also released, and he was swiftly elevated on the shoulders of supporters who chanted his name joyously.“Today signifies support for our fighters,” he stated, flashing a peace sign. The stark contrast of jubilation and mourning encapsulated the complex emotions surrounding the conflict, revealing the human stories behind the political struggles.
