Five Charged in Liam Payne's Mysterious Death in Argentina
Charges filed against multiple individuals shed light on the circumstances surrounding the One Direction star's tragic fall.
Five individuals have been charged in connection to the death of Liam Payne, the beloved singer of One Direction, according to local media sources in Argentina. The 31-year-old artist tragically fell from the third-floor balcony of a hotel in Buenos Aires on October 16. Among those charged are the hotel's manager, Gilda Martin, hotel employee Esteban Grassi, and Roger Nores, a friend of Payne, all facing manslaughter charges as per the Argentina's National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor's Office. Two other hotel employees, Braian Paiz and Ezequiel Pereyra, have been charged with drug distribution.
Reports indicate that a judge mandated the detention of two of the offenders pending trial, with names withheld for legal reasons. They are expected to appear in court within 24 working hours after being summoned. Following the investigation into Payne's last days at the CasaSur hotel, Argentinian authorities had previously announced the charging of three individuals in November without disclosing their identities.
Roger Nores, a friend of Payne’s, spoke to TMZ posthumously, noting that the singer appeared “playful and happy” the last time they were together just preceding the incident. Emergency services were called twice by hotel staff, who reported the star was engaging in erratic behavior, having consumed excessive amounts of alcohol and drugs, which led him to damage hotel property.
Post-mortem examinations revealed a combination of alcohol, cocaine, and a prescription antidepressant in Payne's bloodstream. The autopsy identified "multiple trauma" along with "internal and external hemorrhage" as the causes of death, following his fall from the balcony. Medical evaluations pointed towards the possibility that Payne fell while in a state of diminished consciousness or awareness, dismissing theories of intentional act.
Payne's rise to fame began in the 2010s after competing on The X Factor, later cementing his legacy with the globally recognized boyband before they took an indefinite break in January 2016. A poignant funeral was held last month in Amersham, Buckinghamshire, attended by fellow band members Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, alongside his girlfriend Kate Cassidy and former partner Cheryl, with whom he shares a son.
