Teachers' Protest Disrupts Travel at Mexico City's Main Airport
A powerful protest for better wages brought travel chaos to Mexico City as security forces intervened to restore order.
A significant protest orchestrated by the influential National Educational Workers Coordination, or C.N.T.E., momentarily halted operations at Mexico City’s bustling international airport on Friday. The demonstration, aimed at demanding increased wages for teachers, resulted in travel disruptions affecting thousands of passengers as security personnel rushed to manage the situation in various terminals.
Commencing around 2 p.m. local time, the rally saw hundreds of educators blocking airport entrances, subsequently resulting in gridlock on the access roads in the densely populated region. In the chaotic aftermath, police were observed aiding stranded travelers with transport to the terminal while riot gear-clad officers monitored the scene indoors. Despite the brief nature of the protest, which lasted roughly 20 minutes, several international flights experienced cancellations and extended delays, leading airlines like Aeroméxico to provide flexible rescheduling options.
This protest reflects the increasing pressure on Mexico’s leftist President Claudia Sheinbaum, as unions advocate for better economic conditions amid a challenging fiscal landscape. Key concerns for the union include demands for salary increments that would effectively double the current teacher wages, along with resistance to existing pension and education laws deemed detrimental.
According to union representative Eva Hinojosa Tera, frustration has mounted concerning the lack of attention to their demands, signaling a growing discontent among educational professionals. The C.N.T.E., comprising around 100,000 members, has a history of organizing strikes and demonstrations in pursuit of improved working conditions and compensation for teachers across the nation.
