IDF Acknowledges Fatal Shooting of UN Worker during Gaza Offensive

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have admitted to the accidental killing of a United Nations (UN) employee during an offensive in the Gaza Strip, marking a significant reversal from its initial stance that denied responsibility. The incident occurred on March 19 at a UN compound in Deir al-Balah, where tank fire resulted in the death of Bulgarian UN worker Marin Valev Marinov and injuries to five others.

Initial statements from the IDF suggested that the compound had not been targeted, but findings from an ongoing investigation revealed that troops had erroneously identified the area as housing hostile elements. "The building was struck due to assessed enemy presence and was not identified by the forces as a UN facility," the IDF explained in a statement. They expressed regret for what they termed a "serious incident," extending condolences to Marinov's family.

In the wake of the strike, UN Secretary-General António Guterres demanded a thorough investigation, emphasizing the necessity to protect UN premises, which are recognized under international law. The UN Office for Project Services clarified that the attack involved "explosive ordnance" targeting an isolated guesthouse, labeling the event as "not an accident."

The IDF's actions also faced criticism regarding its operational protocols, particularly following the revelation that other incidents had resulted in the deaths of emergency personnel. Reports later indicated that the ongoing military actions, which resumed after a two-month ceasefire, had claimed nearly 1,978 lives in Gaza, as the conflict escalates with the IDF pursuing military pressure on Hamas to release hostages.
