Surge in Israeli Airstrikes Claims Lives in Gaza Amid Escalating Conflict
Ongoing hostilities result in escalating casualties as Israeli strikes intensify across Gaza territories.
Israeli airstrikes across the Gaza Strip have reportedly killed at least 26 individuals, as Palestinian health officials confirmed the growing toll of violence. In a significant incident overnight, nine Palestinians were killed in an attack on a police station in northern Gaza, with injuries reported among civilians in the Jabalia market area. Eyewitness accounts revealed the devastation as crowds gathered around destroyed buildings.
The Israeli military maintains that the operation targeted a "command-and-control center" used by Hamas and its affiliated Palestinian Islamic Jihad, aimed at thwarting attacks. However, the conflict has claimed at least 17 additional lives on Thursday, as confirmed by Palestinian officials.
Among the victims was a family of six, including four children, whose home in the northern Sheikh Radwan neighborhood was struck during the assault while they slept, according to statements from the Hamas-run Civil Defence agency. A relative of the family, Nidal al-Sarafiti, expressed despair over the tragedy.
The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) reported that a member of their group, Ali al-Sarafiti, was among those killed. In addition, reports indicated that three displaced individuals lost their lives when their tent was bombed near Nuseirat, with two children dying in another strike targeting a tent in Khan Younis.
The health ministry in Gaza has stated that approximately 1,978 individuals have perished since Israeli forces resumed their offensive against Hamas on March 18, following the breakdown of a two-month ceasefire. In tandem, Israel has intensified military pressure on Hamas to secure the release of 59 hostages, while also preventing humanitarian aid deliveries to Gaza for over seven weeks, a situation the UN labeled as exacerbating survival challenges for civilians.
This surge in attacks continues the cycle of violence initiated after a cross-border assault on October 7, 2023, which resulted in around 1,200 casualties and 251 hostages taken. Cumulatively, the health ministry in Gaza reports over 51,300 fatalities since the start of the renewed conflict, highlighting the dire humanitarian crisis as hostilities show no signs of abating.
