Sweden Declares Russia the Primary Security Threat Amid Heightened Tensions
Sweden's security service highlights significant dangers posed by foreign intelligence activities, particularly from Russia, Iran, and China.
Sweden’s security service, Sapo, has declared Russia as the most substantial threat to the nation, citing the Kremlin's aggressive posture towards the West. In its annual report, Sapo noted that although joining NATO has fortified Sweden’s defense, it also led to intensified Russian intelligence operations aimed at destabilizing NATO unity. Despite Russia’s denials, Sapo has raised concerns over hybrid warfare tactics and the rise of violent extremism within Sweden.
Charlotte von Essen, Sapo's head, stressed that the security landscape has grown more perilous and difficult to predict, warning of a "tangible risk" of further deterioration. Since Sweden’s accession to NATO last year, increasing Russian intelligence activity has been noted, particularly focused on undermining Western support for Ukraine and circumventing sanctions.
Sapo's report highlighted the alarming trend of foreign meddling in Sweden’s security affairs, with escalating incidents of potential sabotage against infrastructure, notably undersea cables and pipelines since the beginning of the Ukraine war. The agency reported ongoing monitoring efforts by NATO following these acts.
Further complicating the security situation, Sapo identified Iran and China as significant threats with their own sets of intelligence operations and cyberattacks. Iran's alleged interference, including hacking activities related to text messaging services, has been termed "baseless" by Iranian officials. Concurrently, Sapo underscored the rising threat of terrorism, which now includes actors motivated by external influences and those radicalized online.
In light of escalating tensions, Sapo has emphasized the importance of public vigilance against anti-state narratives and conspiracy theories that can destabilize the societal fabric. As the threat landscape continues to evolve, Sweden remains on alert, with a terrorism threat level pegged at four out of five.
