Trump Poised to Protect TikTok from Imminent Ban, Adviser Claims

A bold move by Trump's administration could bring respite to TikTok users facing a ban.

Congressman Mike Waltz indicates that the president-elect's strategy may suspend the anticipated ban as lawmakers weigh their options.

In a surprising turn of events, US President-elect Donald Trump is reportedly planning to intervene to save TikTok from an impending ban set to take effect this weekend. According to Congressman Mike Waltz, a key adviser and Florida Republican, Trump aims to find a way to maintain the popular social media platform in light of concerns regarding its Chinese ownership. The ban, which would prevent the app's continued use unless it is sold by January 19, has been a hot topic, especially with potential national security implications being cited.

Waltz stated on Thursday, "We will put measures in place to keep TikTok from going dark," suggesting that Trump may utilize the 90-day extension in the law for ByteDance to negotiate a sale as a means to grant him presence and influence over the situation. The emphasis is clearly on urgency, particularly as the Biden administration reportedly considers avenues to thwart the app's withdrawal, as it could leave 170 million US users in limbo.

It is noted that the legislation does not directly shutter the app, but would encourage major tech companies such as Apple and Google to cease offering it, which analysts warn could lead to a slow demise of TikTok. Meanwhile, potential solutions are also being mulled by President Biden, who signed the law last April as part of a broader legislative package. Sources indicate that discussions are ongoing regarding a temporary deferral of the ban.

Additionally, Trump has signaled an interest in holding discussions with TikTok's CEO, Shou Zi Chew, who has been invited to his upcoming inauguration ceremony. This gesture indicates an intention to cultivate a cooperative relationship. Despite previous attempts to prohibit the app during his administration, Trump's recent remarks suggest a shift toward protection.

As the Supreme Court weighs the legality of the bipartisan law that could enforce the ban, several scenarios have emerged that highlight the fluidity of the situation. Both administrations have navigated differing strategies regarding TikTok, thereby altering their stances depending on political currents.
