Brooklyn McDonald's Enforces Age Restrictions Amid Rising Youth Crime

In response to escalating violence, a Brooklyn McDonald's now requires patrons under 20 to show ID and be accompanied by an adult.

The fast-food chain's drastic measure follows a surge in disturbances, including recent violence involving teenagers, leading to heated debates over youth restrictions.

The McDonald's at Nostrand and Flatbush Avenues in Brooklyn has implemented a controversial new policy aimed at combating increasing crime and disorder. Under this rule, individuals under the age of 20 are no longer allowed to enter the establishment without identification and the presence of an adult guardian. This decision comes in light of a disturbing spike in violent incidents—one notable instance involving masked youths attacking a security guard and vandalizing property has fueled public safety concerns.

Manager Amber Bussain noted that the restaurant has faced overwhelming disruptions from unruly teenagers for the past year. Bussain described a chaotic environment, with groups of 15 to 20 youths frequently entering the premises to create havoc, harass staff and fellow customers, and even steal from delivery drivers. "They come in just to cause trouble," she remarked, detailing incidents of throwing ice at patrons and smoking illegal substances within the venue.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) has responded to complaints from this McDonald's location 29 times in 2025 alone, and over 100 times annually in previous years—a trend that has contributed to local concerns regarding youth behavior in fast-food establishments. The uptick in disorderly conduct has made it increasingly challenging for employees to manage situations effectively.

Community reactions to the new age restriction have been mixed. Supporters argue that it is a necessary step towards restoring safety in public spaces, while critics claim that such a policy is unduly punitive toward all young individuals for the actions of a disruptive minority.

Similar challenges have plagued McDonald's locations across the country, with various franchises opting to employ private security or enforcing curfews to combat late-night violence. The policy in Brooklyn highlights a broader trend of businesses taking proactive measures in response to escalating crime rates. As the safety measures are put in place, observers are left to question whether these approaches will truly mitigate the issue or simply redirect unruly behavior elsewhere.
