In the Shadows: The Resilience of Nairobi's Underground L.G.B.T.Q. Church

A clandestine community embraces faith amid adversity as Kenya's only L.G.B.T.Q. congregation finds solace in secrecy.

Over the past decade, Nairobi's L.G.B.T.Q. congregation, led by Pastor Caroline Omolo, has faced relentless persecution, yet they have established a secret sanctuary where they can worship freely and openly express their identities.

In the heart of Nairobi, an underground church dedicated to L.G.B.T.Q. individuals has not only persisted but thrived, despite enduring harassment and violence over the past ten years. Being forcibly displaced from ten different locations, the congregation has faced numerous challenges, including vandalism, police arrests, and violent confrontations with neighbors. Yet, against all odds, they have found a hidden sanctuary where their faith can coexist with their identities.

On a recent Sunday, amid echoes of chants and heartfelt affirmations, nearly 100 congregants gathered in a discreet space, carefully vetted for safety by church members. Pastor Caroline Omolo delivered a powerful sermon, addressing the pain of rejection many attendees have faced from their families and traditional churches. “For those who were cast aside, I’ve found a home for you in the Bible. Praise the Lord!” His words resonated deeply, as they celebrated the acceptance and love that the church embodies.

Many members of this congregation have escaped from neighboring countries where being openly L.G.B.T.Q. can lead to life-threatening consequences. For these fearless individuals, Sunday service represents not only an act of worship, but also an affirmation of their right to live authentically. With attendance fluctuating between 50 to 200 attendees, this sanctuary stands as a testament to their resilience and determination to forge a space of belonging while navigating an increasingly hostile environment.

As Pastor Omolo and his flock continue to navigate the challenges of underground worship, their story is a poignant reminder of the struggle for acceptance and the power of faith to unite even the most marginalized communities. In a world rife with intolerance, they choose to stand firm, together, and unyielding in their pursuit of love and liberation.
