Tragic Death Highlights Dangers of Viral Tackle Game in New Zealand

A popular social media-inspired tackle game claims the life of a young Kiwi, raising safety concerns.

A 19-year-old man’s fatal head injury from the viral game "run it straight" has sparked widespread discussions about safety in sports and recreational activities.

A 19-year-old New Zealand resident, identified as Ryan Satterthwaite, tragically lost his life due to a serious head injury incurred while playing "run it straight", a tackle game that has gained notoriety through social media. Local authorities noted that Satterthwaite died in a Palmerston North hospital following the injury sustained while engaging in the game with friends.

The game is characterized by two players—one holding a ball and the other attempting to tackle them—charging at one another at full speed, usually without any protective gear. Following this incident, police spokesperson Ross Grantham urged prospective players to acknowledge the significant safety risks involved in participating in such activities, even if they are spontaneous among friends and not organized events.

"Run it straight" has roots in casual play across Australia and New Zealand but has seen a surge in popularity online, partly due to endorsements by professional rugby athletes. However, this trend has raised alarms about the potential for serious injuries, including head trauma. Social media platforms have showcased numerous instances where participants collapse or lose consciousness following tackles.

As the game's allure grows, unofficial tournaments like the Runit Championship League have emerged, drawing crowds and offering substantial prizes. The inaugural event in Auckland attracted over 1,000 spectators, but it also raised concerns about participant safety, with reports of injuries and alarming incidents, including a player appearing to seize after a collision.

Kimami Ngaluafe, who organizes another event labeled "Up the Guts NZ", acknowledged the long-standing popularity of the game among New Zealanders of all ages while stressing the need for enhanced safety measures. He emphasized that players should be equipped with protective gear and be monitored closely to minimize risks.

The tragic passing of Satterthwaite serves as a dire reminder of the safety challenges faced in recreational sports, especially those influenced by online trends. Advocates for safer gameplay encourage responsible guidance and oversight to protect players, particularly younger participants who are eager to engage in the excitement of this informal Kiwi pastime.
