Cat's Accidental Adventure: Mittens Flies Cross-Tasman Twice in 24 Hours
An eight-year-old Maine Coon named Mittens embarks on an unintended journey through New Zealand and Australia after being left behind on a plane.
In a remarkable tale that has captured the hearts of many, an eight-year-old Maine Coon named Mittens made three flights across the Tasman Sea within a single day after being inadvertently left on an Air New Zealand plane. Booked for a trip from Christchurch to Melbourne on January 12, Mittens found herself alone in the aircraft's cargo hold when her transportation cage was overlooked.
After waiting three hours for her beloved pet at Melbourne’s airport, owner Margo Neas faced the unexpected news from ground staff that Mittens had already been sent back to Christchurch. Confusion erupted when airport personnel revealed that the feline companion had never been taken off the plane; officials explained that the pilot had received instructions to turn on the heating in the cargo area to ensure Mittens' comfort, as the temperature can drop as low as 7C.
As the mishap unfolded, Ms. Neas, along with her son, expressed their disbelief at the airline’s discovery. “How can this happen?” she demanded after learning about the blunder. The airline is currently investigating the incident, with preliminary reports suggesting a stowed wheelchair may have obstructed the staff's view of Mittens' cage.
In an official response, Air New Zealand extended apologies to the Neas family and offered to reimburse their travel expenses due to the distress caused by this incident. Ms. Neas also highlighted that, because of airline policies, direct pet bookings on international flights are not permitted and must instead go through approved carriers.
Finally reuniting with Mittens, Ms. Neas shared her joy with NBC news, recounting the emotional moment the cat leaped into her arms for a cuddle. “It was just such a relief,” she said, reflecting on what has been a bumpy beginning to their new chapter in Melbourne. The direct flight from Christchurch to Melbourne typically lasts under four hours, but for Mittens, the unexpected journey turned out to be an unforgettable adventure.
