When Donald Trump promised on the campaign trail to create the "largest deportation programme of criminals in the history of America," it capitalized on widespread concerns about illegal immigration among the American populace. However, since taking office, the scope of ICE’s operations has widened, capturing not only individuals with criminal records but also many with clean backgrounds, including migrants, tourists, and activists.
The landscape of immigration enforcement is now marked by significant unrest, particularly evident in Los Angeles where protests have erupted following intensified ICE raids in local workplaces. As of early June, around 51,000 undocumented migrants were held in ICE detention, the highest figure since September 2019. Several international visitors have experienced detainment for reasons ranging from visa mix-ups to overstaying their entry permits, illustrating that ICE’s reach extends into the lives of individuals with no substantive ties to criminal activity. Many of these cases have brought considerable public attention as examples of the administration’s aggressive policies, with Canadian actress Jasmine Mooney and TikTok star Khaby Lame highlighting concerns regarding mistreatment in custody.
International relations are not immune to this upheaval either. In El Salvador, the Trump administration’s approach towards gang members has resulted in controversial mass deportations and detentions, with families disputing claims of gang affiliation based on innocent body art. Advocates argue that many deported individuals, such as Kilmar Abrego Garcia, faced wrongful deportations despite jurisprudential condemnation from courts.
Student activists are also increasingly in ICE’s crosshairs, particularly those involved in political protests. Reports indicate a surge in arrests among green card holders and visa holders, with claims of political motives surfacing. Notably, international students engaged in protesting perceived injustices have seen their visas revoked as part of a crackdown on what has been characterized as anti-Semitism on university campuses.
