Sister Inah Canabarro Lucas, recognized as the world’s oldest living person, has passed away at the age of 116. Born on June 8, 1908, in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, Sister Inah dedicated her life to serving God as a Catholic nun, entering the religious community in her early twenties. Her family revealed she had a unique way of celebrating her birthdays, preferring cakes shaped like the stadium of Sport Club Internacional, her favored football team.
Throughout her life, Sister Inah attributed her remarkable longevity to her unwavering faith, humbly claiming, "God is the secret to life." Having received a blessing from Pope Francis in 2018, her death now marks the end of an era, with her title of the oldest living person transitioning to Ethel Caterham, a 115-year-old woman from Surrey, England.
Her nephew shared that Sister Inah's health had declined gradually, but she remained free of serious illnesses until her peaceful passing in Porto Alegre at her residential community for the Teresian Sisters. Known for her passion for football, she celebrated her 116th birthday adorned in her team scarf and possessing multiple International jerseys, truly embodying her team's spirit.
A fellow nun from her convent remarked on Sister Inah's thankful nature and positive outlook, stating she never complained despite facing the challenges of aging. Sister Rita Fernandes Barbosa, a close companion, added that Sister Inah had maintained a healthy lifestyle, having only undergone a cataract procedure at the remarkable age of 106.
