Witkoff's Diplomatic Push: Trump Calls for Urgency in Ceasefire Discussions
US Envoy Convenes with Putin Amidst Ongoing Ukrainian Conflict
US special envoy Steve Witkoff held discussions with President Vladimir Putin on Friday, marking his third diplomatic engagement with the Russian leader this year, amidst a backdrop of prolonged tensions in Ukraine. In a social media statement, former President Donald Trump urged Putin to "get moving" on negotiations for a ceasefire, lamenting the increasing toll of the conflict with "too many people DYING—thousands a week—in a terrible and senseless war."
This meeting coincided with a significant gathering in Brussels, where allies of Ukraine, including the UK and Germany, committed €21bn (£18.2bn) in military aid to support Kyiv. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov remarked before the meeting in St Petersburg that expectations should be tempered as "the process of normalising relations is ongoing," indicating a cautious approach to the ongoing discussions.
As the international community rallies around Ukraine, the push for a diplomatic resolution intensifies, with Witkoff's role critical in navigating the complexities of US-Russia relations.
