A woman has succumbed to her injuries sustained from the devastating impact when a man drove his vehicle into a crowded Christmas market in Magdeburg last month, bringing the total death count to six. The 52-year-old victim passed away in a hospital two weeks after the tragic incident on December 20, which injured at least 299. Among the deceased were four women aged between 45 and 75 and a nine-year-old boy, André Gleißner.
The primary suspect, identified as 50-year-old Taleb al-Abdulmohsen, was apprehended at the scene. Authorities are still piecing together his motivations, which remain shrouded in mystery despite his known history as a Saudi psychiatrist who had resided in Germany since 2006. Abdulmohsen was granted asylum in 2016 and operated a website intended to aid former Muslims in escaping oppression in their home countries. Alarmingly, he had also expressed extremist anti-Islamic views and embraced far-right conspiracy theories regarding the so-called “Islamisation” of Europe.
German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser noted that the suspect clearly harbored "Islamophobic" sentiments, stating, "The perpetrator does not fit into any previous categorisation". Abdulmohsen has been placed in pre-trial detention, charged with murder, attempted murder, and causing serious bodily harm.
The incident is prompting a thorough investigation into security lapses, with reports surfacing about warnings sent by the Saudi government to German authorities regarding Abdulmohsen's extreme ideologies.
