Tragic Bus Accident in Bolivia Claims Over 30 Lives

A bus crash in Bolivia's mountainous region has resulted in the death of at least 30 individuals, exacerbating the nation's ongoing struggle with road safety.

More than 30 individuals tragically lost their lives in a catastrophic bus incident that occurred on a perilous mountain road in Bolivia. According to police reports, the driver seemingly lost control of the vehicle, leading it to plunge nearly 800 meters (approximately 2625 feet) in the Yocalla district. Among the injured, 14 people, including four children, were reported and treated at a local hospital, where officials acknowledged that some victims were in critical condition.

The treacherous roads of Bolivia are infamous for their hazards, especially in higher altitudes. The tragic event unfolded between the cities of Potosi and Oruro, with police suspecting that speeding may have contributed to the accident. Police Colonel Victor Benavides, speaking to AFP news agency, stated that the driver appeared to be "unable" to handle the vehicle, marking this incident as one of the deadliest road accidents in Bolivia this year.

Local news sources, such as Unitel, have emphasized the severity of the injuries among survivors. The frequency of deadly road incidents in Bolivia remains a significant concern; just last month, a separate bus accident near Potosi resulted in 19 fatalities. Government statistics indicate that road accidents claim approximately 1,400 lives annually in the nation, which has a population of around 12 million.
