Farewell to Buhari: Nigeria Prepares for Former Leader's Burial
The body of Muhammadu Buhari, Nigeria's former president, is set to return home for a modest burial in Daura.
The body of Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday in London, is being transported back to Nigeria for burial in Daura, a town approximately 50 miles (80km) away from Katsina city. Katsina state governor Dikko Radda, present in London alongside Buhari's family, indicated that the burial will occur later today. Nigeria's Vice-President Kashim Shettima, also in attendance, confirmed via social media that Daura will be Buhari’s final resting place. Radda noted that Buhari's passing followed a brief illness; however, it is acknowledged that the late leader faced health issues for several years. Despite his status as a former president, a state funeral will not be held, aligning with Islamic customs that advocate for swift burial. Islamic cleric Abdullahi Garangamawa mentioned that the only condition preventing today’s burial would be if Buhari’s body arrives too late for a daytime ceremony, in which case it would take place on Tuesday morning.
A flood of tributes for Buhari has emerged since his death, highlighting his influence as one of just two leaders to have served Nigeria in both military and civilian capacities post-independence. Former President Goodluck Jonathan, who lost to Buhari in the 2015 elections, praised him for his selfless dedication and patriotism. General Ibrahim Babangida, who was ousted by Buhari during a 1985 coup, acknowledged him as a “moral compass” even in retirement. Current President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has also declared a seven-day national mourning period in Buhari's honor. Tinubu stated that Nigeria will pay its respects with dignity, beginning with the lowering of national flags to half-mast.
