Baby Gorilla Zeytin Recovers from Traumatic Smuggling Journey
Zeytin, a baby gorilla rescued last year from a plane's shipping container at Istanbul airport, is on the road to recovery and may be returned to his native Nigeria soon. The young gorilla, whose name was chosen through a public competition, has been receiving care at Turkey's Polonezkoy Zoo where he underwent rehabilitation following his harrowing experience at the hands of smugglers.
Since his rescue in December, Zeytin has shown remarkable improvement in health, gaining weight and growing taller. However, Turkish authorities are concerned about his safety upon returning to Nigeria and are seeking assurances that he will not fall victim to illegal traders.
The intervention marks an important step in protecting endangered species and emphasizes international cooperation in wildlife preservation. Zeytin's future now hangs in the balance as preparations for his repatriation unfold.
