**Italian Authorities Unleash Major Offensive Against Mafia Networks in Sicily**

**More than 180 arrests made in expansive operation against organized crime.**

**In a sweeping crackdown involving over 1,200 officers, Italian police have intensified efforts to dismantle the Mafia's grip on Sicily, signaling a robust response to recent criminal activities.**

The Italian police launched a large-scale operation in the early hours of Tuesday, targeting Mafia clans in Palermo and its surroundings. This extensive drive, employing over 1,200 officers primarily from the Carabinieri military police, aims at a decisive blow to the organized crime syndicate known as Cosa Nostra, attempting to prevent the resurgence of their ruling body, the Cupola.

This initiative marks one of the most significant anti-Mafia operations in recent years as authorities strive to counteract the Mafia's resurgence following the release of several key figures from prison due to legal appeals. Despite the incarceration of many leaders, investigators revealed that some inmates had successfully smuggled encrypted mobile phones into their cells to maintain ongoing criminal operations.

Recent findings indicated that the Mafia has adapted from its traditional practices, with leaders no longer requiring physical meetings to coordinate activities. A significant figure managed to operate from hiding, retaining influence over local criminal networks. For over a century, Sicily's Mafia was synonymous with systemic extortion and drug trafficking, imposing a reign of fear over local businesses and communities.

Efforts intensified in the early 1990s as determined anti-Mafia prosecutors faced brutal assassinations in a bid to combat these criminal organizations. The arrest of notorious bosses, such as "Toto" Riina in 1993 and mafia fugitive Matteo Messina Denaro in early 2023, marked crucial milestones in this battle.

The recent operation revealed the ongoing struggles for law enforcement, as police have only partially been able to penetrate the secrecy of encrypted communications used by suspected criminals. Reports indicated that authorities are tracking individuals linked to these communications, who reportedly operate under nicknames such as "Robert de Niro" and "Spider Man."

The raids began prior to dawn and spanned multiple districts of Palermo, targeting areas from Tommaso Natale to Porta Nuova. The operation aimed to address a broad array of serious offenses, including mafia membership, drug trafficking, attempted murder, and various armed crimes. Among those apprehended was Tommaso Lo Presti, a recently released boss celebrated for a controversial anniversary event in a church dedicated to anti-Mafia efforts.

As Italian law enforcement continues its pursuit of organized crime, this operation underscores both the persistence of the Mafia and the commitment of authorities to dismantle its longstanding influence over Sicilian society.
