In the coastal region of Syria, turmoil has driven hundreds of civilians to seek shelter at the Hmeimim airbase, shared with Latakia International Airport. Satellite images and verified footage reveal a significant influx of displaced individuals fleeing the violent clashes between forces loyal to the new government under Ahmed al-Shara and those still aligned with the ousted president Bashar al-Assad. As many as 1,300 deaths have been reported since the unrest began, with around 1,000 of those casualties being civilians, according to reports from the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an organization monitoring the conflict landscape.

Recent videos from the site captured scenes of large crowds urging for international protection, waving placards and expressing desperation as military personnel provided food. Cars have been seen parked in the compound, indicating an urgent need for shelter as civilians congregate amid a chaotic backdrop of violence and uncertainty. Military tents are now pitched within the airbase grounds, further underscoring the gravity of the situation as victims of the ongoing conflict grapple with an increasingly dire reality.
