Naval Speedboat Collision: 13 Lives Lost in Mumbai Ferry Disaster
Tragic maritime accident claimed lives, highlighting safety concerns in busy tourist area.
At least 13 individuals have tragically lost their lives after a naval speedboat collided with a passenger ferry near Mumbai's coastline, according to reports from the Indian Navy. Among the deceased, three were navy personnel, while more than 100 passengers were successfully rescued, as noted by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
Footage circulating on social media captured the moment the speedboat veered out of control before colliding with the ferry, which subsequently capsized. The Indian Navy attributed the collision to an "engine malfunction" during ongoing trials.
The privately operated ferry was en route to the Elephanta Caves, a significant tourist attraction known for its ancient rock-cut temples, when disaster struck. A spokesperson for the Indian Navy expressed their sorrow over the incident, stating, "A Navy craft undergoing engine trials lost control and collided with a passenger ferry," which resulted in a tragic loss of life.
A witness aboard the ferry recounted the harrowing experience, stating, "The speedboat crashed into our boat, and water started pouring in. The driver urged us to don our life jackets." One passenger detailed his escape, saying, "I swam for 15 minutes while waiting for rescue from another boat."
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on social media, stating, "The boat mishap in Mumbai is saddening. My heartfelt sympathies go out to the bereaved families. I hope for the swift recovery of the injured." The incident has stirred concerns about safety measures in the region, particularly in high-traffic tourist areas.
