Top Russian General Killed by Ukrainian Strike in Kursk Region

On July 3, 2025, Russia's defense ministry reported that Major General Mikhail Gudkov, a highly ranked marine commander, was killed in an apparent Ukrainian missile strike in the Kursk region near the Ukrainian border. Just three months prior, Gudkov was promoted to deputy chief of the Russian Navy, reflecting his role in coordinating coastal and ground forces. His military career included leadership of the 155th Naval Infantry Brigade, which became notorious for its involvement in controversial operations during the early stages of the Ukraine invasion and its recent engagement in the contested Kursk area.
