A fortuitous twist of fate, paired with groundbreaking medical advancements, played a vital role in Serhiy's survival: a magnetic extractor. Cardiovascular surgeon Dr. Serhiy Maksymenko detailed the process during the operation, explaining how a small incision allowed for the insertion of a magnet, which efficiently drew the deadly shrapnel out. This innovative device, developed after frontline medics saw a pressing need for quicker and safer extraction methods, has already facilitated over 70 successful operations in just a year.

Volunteer Oleh Bykov spearheaded the modernisation of this age-old concept, enhancing its application for contemporary battlefield injuries. Magnets have historically been used for metal removal since the Crimean War, but the new flexible models can handle delicate abdominal procedures as well as stronger extractions for bones. Despite its effectiveness, the magnetic extractor has not yet received formal certification from the Ukrainian Health Ministry, citing the necessity of compliance with technical regulations.
