Haifa Train Station Attack Leaves One Dead and Several Injured
An elderly man is killed, and four others are wounded in a knife assault at a Haifa train station, triggering widespread outrage and responses from Israeli officials.
A tragic incident unfolded at the HaMifratz Central train and bus station in Haifa, Israel, where an elderly man lost his life and four others sustained injuries during what authorities are labeling a terrorist attack. The assailant, a Druze man from Shfaram, was shot dead by security personnel at the scene.
The victim who died was approximately 70 years old, as reported by the Magen David Adom ambulance service. Among the injured, a 15-year-old boy and a man and woman in their 30s are reported to be in serious condition, while a 70-year-old woman has suffered moderate injuries.
Witness accounts detail the assailant, after arriving by bus from Shfaram situated about 10 kilometers east of Haifa, commenced his attack on passengers as the bus reached the station, subsequently continuing his stabbings within the concourse area.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed his condolences, condemning the attack: "My wife Sara and I send our deepest condolences to the family of the man who was murdered in the shocking terrorist attack in Haifa. We will continue to fight everywhere against those who seek to murder us and we will defeat them."
Though no armed groups have made a direct claim of responsibility, Hamas referred to the attack as “heroic” and a “natural response” to alleged Israeli actions against Palestinians. This occurrence comes amidst a deadlock in negotiations for a six-week-old ceasefire deal between Hamas and Israel, where aid has been halted following disputes over the agreement's next phases.
