The soldiers had been detained in the Cauca region, known for its association with the EMC rebel group, which is heavily involved in cocaine production and trafficking. Minister Sánchez attributed the soldiers' abduction to direct orders from the EMC, adding that the incident was provoked by the arrest of a suspected EMC member just prior to the soldiers’ capture.
As military personnel attempted to airlift the detained suspect, they were quickly surrounded by a mob of over 100 locals.
