Prosecutors revealed that Smith sold her daughter for 20,000 rand (approximately $1,100) while battling a drug addiction, and her actions have triggered a wave of outrage across the country. Alongside Smith, two other men, Jacquin Appollis and Steveno van Rhyn, were also sentenced to life in prison for their roles in the heinous crime.
The girl disappeared in February 2024, sparking an extensive community and police search, during which her image was disseminated by local and national media.
