Hidden Tragedy: New Homeowners Unveil Long-Standing Mystery in French Attic
Renovation work in a French house turns into a shocking discovery when the remains of a missing man are found.
New buyers in eastern France made a startling discovery while renovating their newly acquired property: the skeletal remains of the previous owner, Aloïs Iffly, who went missing in 2009, were found hidden in the attic. Local reports from Le Republicain Lorrain revealed that the man, who was 81 at the time of his disappearance, had not been heard from since, and his wife lived in the house until passing away in 2020.
The present owners, seeking to fix a leak in the roof, stumbled upon the remains tucked away in a cubbyhole on November 2. Prosecutor Olivier Glady stated that preliminary findings suggest the scene may point towards suicide, particularly with a rope also found hanging in the attic area. The house, located in the small village of Erstroff, less than an hour from Saarbrücken, Germany, was sold in 2023.
An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death, and police have begun a detailed investigation. This tragic discovery may finally shed light on the 15-year-old mystery surrounding Aloïs Iffly’s disappearance, a case that had baffled investigators and the local community for over a decade.
