In a significant policy shift, US House Speaker Mike Johnson has called for the release of all documents related to Jeffrey Epstein, contrasting with President Trump's stance to downplay the issue. This split has ignited debate among Republican lawmakers, who are pushing for greater accountability and transparency about Epstein's alleged abuses.

Speaker Mike Johnson breaks from Trump, advocating for full disclosure of Jeffrey Epstein's files.
US House of Representatives Speaker Mike Johnson has placed himself at odds with President Donald Trump by advocating for the full disclosure of files related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Johnson's call for "transparency" comes as Trump seeks to move past the Epstein controversy, referring to it as a distraction for his supporters.
In an interview earlier this week, Johnson stated, “We should put everything on the table and let the people decide,” emphasizing the need for open access to the files held by the Justice Department. This marks a notable departure from Trump's more cautious approach, wherein he expressed trust in Attorney General Pam Bondi's judgment regarding the release of information, stating, “Whatever she thinks is credible, she should release.”
The Epstein saga continues to stir up conspiracy theories within Trump's Make America Great Again (MAGA) following, particularly surrounding his 2019 death in prison, ruled a suicide. Many supporters suspect a cover-up involving powerful figures and intelligence services.
Despite Trump’s recent comments urging followers to divert their focus from Epstein, his base remains unsettled. Speaking on the issue, Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor-Greene aligned with Johnson's call for transparency, asserting that promises made to voters must be honored. Similarly, Colorado Republican Lauren Boebert suggested that if further files are not released, a special counsel should investigate Epstein's crimes.
Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana reinforced the push for clarity, stating that voters deserve to understand who Epstein trafficked victims to and why there has been a lack of prosecutions. Meanwhile, Speaker Johnson maintains his support for Trump, highlighting that the White House possesses information unavailable to him.
In light of these events, Bondi has faced scrutiny, responding to questions about Epstein’s files with defiance, stating she would not engage with the matter further after a DOJ memo indicated no "client list" would be released, based on an extensive review of over 300 gigabytes of data.
On the other hand, House Democrats attempted to force a vote on the release of Epstein’s files but were met with opposition from their Republican counterparts, who pointed out the Biden administration also had access to the same information without making any disclosures. The conflict continues to reveal fissures within the Republican party regarding the handling of Epstein's legacy and the accountability owed to the public.
