Russia Maintains Ties with US Amid Trump’s Anger Towards Putin
Kremlin downplays tensions after President Trump expresses frustration towards Russian leadership over Ukraine situation.
Russia has declared its ongoing cooperation with the US, even as President Trump expresses significant frustration with Vladimir Putin over his remarks regarding Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Following Trump’s emotionally charged comments during an NBC News interview, the Kremlin’s spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, sought to ease concerns about growing media-generated tensions between the two leaders. “We continue working with the US side, first of all, on building our relations,” Peskov stated, though he added that no immediate plans existed for a conversation between Trump and Putin, despite the latter being open to further discussions if required.
Trump’s ire was particularly directed at Putin’s suggestion of an interim UN-supported government in Ukraine, which he perceived as an undermining of Zelensky’s credibility. During his interview, Trump indicated that such talks could further hinder peace negotiations, stating, “New leadership means you're not gonna have a deal for a long time.” In a clear shift from his prior stance, Trump threatened to impose a steep tariff on countries importing Russian oil should Putin not support a ceasefire initiative.
In the aftermath of Trump's comments, Russian media echoed some of the criticism directed towards the US president, with pro-Kremlin outlets pointing out that Trump has failed to deliver on his commitments to further stabilize the situation in Ukraine. The Moskovsky Komsomolets newspaper noted that Trump’s agreements often hold little weight, remarking that “all agreements on the level of President Trump are only worth a few pennies on market day.” Nevertheless, the publication concluded that Moscow remains ready to negotiate with the American leader.
As the situation remains fluid, it is noteworthy that US and Russian officials have been engaged in discussions over the past weeks aiming at a resolution to the conflict in Ukraine, a process repeatedly complicated by Trump’s changing tone toward both Putin and Zelensky.
