### Eduardo Bolsonaro Seeks Asylum in the U.S. Amid Political Turmoil in Brazil
Eduardo Bolsonaro claims persecution in Brazil ties to his defense of right-wing ideologies as he seeks refuge in the United States.
Eduardo Bolsonaro, a Brazilian congressman and son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, has declared his intention to seek political asylum in the United States, claiming he faces persecution upon his return to Brazil. In a video posted on social media on March 18, 2025, he cited threats to his safety as a result of his position in the right-wing movement, which his father epitomized during his presidency.
Since arriving in the United States in late February, Mr. Bolsonaro has found himself embroiled in controversies surrounding accusations against his father, particularly regarding efforts to meddle in judicial proceedings following Jair Bolsonaro's defeat in the 2022 elections. Brazilian authorities have been deliberating whether to seize Eduardo's passport amid allegations he supported his father's purported coup attempts.
In his communication, the 40-year-old congressman stated he would withdraw from his duties as a federal lawmaker in Brazil, indicating his preference to remain in the U.S. His relationship with former President Trump, including visits to Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate, underscores the ideological connections he shares with the American right.
He openly criticized Brazilian Supreme Court justice Alexandre de Moraes, who oversees the criminal case against Jair Bolsonaro, suggesting the intention is not only to discredit but to imprison the former president. "If Alexandre de Moraes wants to seize my passport or even arrest me so that I can no longer report his crimes in the United States, then this is precisely where I will stay and work harder than ever," Eduardo Bolsonaro declared.
Shortly after his announcement, Brazil's top prosecutor clarified that there were currently no efforts to revoke Mr. Bolsonaro's passport. Eduardo's asylum request comes at a pivotal moment, just as Brazil's Supreme Court evaluates whether to initiate a trial against his father for allegedly orchestrating a vast plan to undermine democracy in the country.
The accusations assert that Jair Bolsonaro's attempts included efforts to nullify electoral results, dissolve the judiciary, and target President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva for assassination. The elder Bolsonaro has consistently dismissed these claims as politically charged.
Eduardo Bolsonaro likened his father's situation to Donald Trump's own legal controversies, asserting a belief that the judicial actions against both leaders are part of a coordinated effort to eliminate opposition voices. "I have no doubt that our enemies’ plan is to incarcerate him, to assassinate him in prison, or leave him there forever, just as would have happened with Donald Trump if he had not been re-elected in 2024," he said.
Trump's media organization has also filed lawsuits against Justice Moraes, further highlighting the ongoing tensions between right-wing figures in both Brazil and the United States who view social media censorship as a significant threat to their platforms.
