**Emergency Summit on Ukraine: European Leaders Address Rising Tensions Amid US-Russia Negotiations**

European leaders convene urgently to discuss Ukraine's future as US moves raise concerns about the peace process.

European leaders are preparing for an emergency summit to tackle escalating worries regarding the war in Ukraine and the implications of Donald Trump's involvement in upcoming peace negotiations.

European leaders are set to assemble in Paris for an emergency summit aimed at addressing the deepening conflict in Ukraine, as apprehensions mount over Donald Trump's impact on the peace process. British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer proclaimed this moment to be critical for national security, emphasizing the necessity for Europe to strengthen its role in NATO. The urgency of the summit follows Trump's envoy to Ukraine suggesting that European nations would primarily serve a consultative role for potential peace talks between the US and Russia, rather than as decision-makers.

Meetings are scheduled shortly between US officials and Russian and Ukrainian representatives in Saudi Arabia, as stated by American diplomats. Starmer, amid this tension, aims to unify both the US and European perspectives for a coordinated strategy to establish lasting peace in Ukraine. His visit to the White House at month-end will include discussions about the summit's outcomes, alongside plans to meet with President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine soon after.

Zelensky, asserting Ukraine's sovereignty and agency, previously stated that any negotiations conducted without Ukraine's consent would be unacceptable. He advised for the creation of a "European Army" to defend against emerging threats, particularly in light of perceived diminishing support from the US. Adulting his views, US Vice-President JD Vance noted that Europe's reliance on America was waning, urging European nations to bolster their own defenses.

Furthermore, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio participated in talks with Russia’s foreign minister, building on earlier dialogues involving Trump and Putin. The aim is to facilitate a meeting inclusive of Trump, Putin, and Zelensky that could finalize pathways to peace. This sentiment was echoed by House Foreign Affairs Committee chair Michael McCaul, who commented on the invitation extended to Zelensky for involvement in the Saudi discussions.

Amid these dynamics, UK foreign secretary David Lammy articulated the need for European nations to amplify defense expenditures, stating that even with a framework for peace, the threat from Putin remains significant and persistent.
