Desperate Times in Gaza as U.N. Closes Bakeries Amid Humanitarian Crisis
Residents Face Rising Food Prices and Limited Options as Aid Efforts Falter
As the humanitarian crisis in Gaza escalates, the United Nations announced the closure of 25 bakeries across the territory, a move that has left residents scrambling for food amidst dire conditions. Bilal Mohammad Ramadan AbuKresh, a 40-year-old father who has already lost his home, job, wife, and seven relatives in the ongoing conflict, expressed his growing despair.
Previously reliant on daily trips to local bakeries, AbuKresh described the long lines of anxious patrons waiting for bread as reminiscent of "the Day of Judgment." The closure comes on the heels of reports that the World Food Program has run out of essential supplies, such as flour and fuel, necessary for bakery operations.
With humanitarian supplies dwindling sharply over the past month, competition for available food has turned violent, further driving up the costs. To provide for his four children, AbuKresh has resorted to desperate measures, including selling trinkets belonging to his children and collecting trash to generate income for food. He conveyed the perilous nature of securing a simple bag of bread, stating, "To secure a bag of bread for my children, I risk death a hundred times."
With inflation skyrocketing, the cost of basic staples like pasta has soared to unreasonable prices, leaving families like AbuKresh’s to navigate an increasingly desperate situation in search of sustenance.
