The iconic actor expresses sorrow over his Malibu home’s destruction and criticizes government response amidst California's ongoing wildfire crisis.
Mel Gibson has revealed that his Malibu residence has been completely destroyed by the wildfires currently ravaging through Los Angeles while he was in Austin, Texas, recording an episode of Joe Rogan's podcast. The Oscar-winning actor described his property as "totally toasted" and expressed his discontent with California Governor Gavin Newsom regarding the crisis management, noting that the state’s actions to protect its forests were insufficient.
"The devastation feels overwhelming, it's emotional," Gibson shared during an interview, feeling uneasy knowing his neighborhood was under threat. Having lived at his Malibu home for approximately 15 years, he mentioned that the homes of many of his neighbors, including renowned actor Ed Harris, suffered similar fates.
Gibson's family heeded evacuation orders and escaped unharmed. In a candid conversation on Rogan's podcast, he aimed sharp criticism at Governor Newsom, alleging that state funds are mismanaged and do not address the dire firefighting needs in the state. “It seems our tax dollars went to Gavin’s hair gel instead of fire control,” he lamented.
As of now, the wildfires have escalated to be the worst in Los Angeles history, engulfing over 31,000 acres and necessitating the evacuation of approximately 180,000 residents. The ongoing crisis has already led to the destruction of around 10,000 buildings, with officials warning that potential high winds could worsen the situation.
Republican President-elect Donald Trump has demanded Governor Newsom’s resignation in light of the disaster response, calling the destruction of the beautiful Californian landscape “shameful.” Newsom, on the other hand, defended state efforts, asserting that all available resources are committed to combating the fires and protecting communities.
In recent updates, it has come to light that many celebrities have faced losses due to the wildfires. Paris Hilton and Billy Crystal are among those who lost their homes. Hilton expressed heartbreak over the loss through a social media video, while Crystal shared similar sentiments after losing his residence of over four decades in Pacific Palisades.
Ricki Lake detailed the loss of her "dream home," and actor Rainn Wilson emphasized the valuable lessons to be learned from this catastrophic event. Several other well-known figures, including Sir Anthony Hopkins and John Goodman, are reported to have also lost their homes. In a show of support for those displaced, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle extended their home to friends and family affected by the wildfires, urging others in California to do the same when able.
