Ghanaian authorities have seized a luxury car owned by renowned musician Charles Nii Armah, popularly known as Shatta Wale, amid allegations of its connection to criminal proceeds linked to a fraud case in the United States. The 2019 Lamborghini Urus is reportedly tied to Nana Kwabena Amuah, who is currently serving a seven-year prison sentence in the US for his role in a widespread fraud operation.
In response to the allegations, Shatta Wale denied any connection to Amuah, claiming to be a "third-party owner" of the vehicle. He expressed outrage on social media over the manner of the seizure, criticizing law enforcement for entering his residence with firearms, an act he deemed excessive and humiliating. "Bringing guns to my house was uncalled for," he stated on his platform, asserting he had documentation proving the legitimacy of his purchase.
The car, acquired by Wale for $150,000, is now under the custody of Ghana's Economic and Organized Crime Office (Eoco). Authorities indicated that the Lamborghini is to be returned to the US as part of Amuah's restitution totaling $4.7 million. Eoco elaborated that their operation was carried out with safety protocols in mind, stating that the recovery was conducted peacefully.
US court documents revealed that Amuah and others in his network allegedly impersonated vendors to swindle about 70 organizations, leading to significant financial losses. In 2023, Amuah was sentenced to 86 months in prison, with the Lamborghini identified among materials earmarked for victim restitution.
