Tragedy Strikes as Nightclub Roof Collapse Claims Lives in Dominican Republic
A beloved nightclub in Santo Domingo becomes the site of a devastating disaster, leaving families in anguish as they await news of their loved ones.
Maximo Peña had been regularly attending the Jet Set nightclub for 30 years, eagerly anticipating a concert by the renowned Dominican singer Rubby Pérez. Tragically, he, along with his wife and sister, are now believed to be trapped under the rubble, following a catastrophic roof collapse that occurred mid-performance. “I haven’t heard any news about any of them,” lamented 17-year-old Shailyn Peña, who anxiously awaited information outside the destroyed venue.
Shailyn expressed her sorrow as she sat on a wall, recalling how her father had invited her mother to join them, but she declined. “It was a blessing in disguise,” Shailyn reflected. Rescue workers are conducting desperate searches among the debris, supplemented by Israeli and Mexican teams utilizing advanced heat-seeking technology to locate survivors. Amongst the rescuers is Shailyn's cousin, which offers her a glimmer of hope amidst despair.
The long wait for news has been excruciating, with Shailyn admitting, “I feel the urge to just go in there and push aside all the rocks and pull him out.” Meanwhile, authorities are keeping the public informed on the grim situation, as the death toll continues to rise. Bodies are being recovered at intervals, and on rare occasions, survivors are being discovered. Juan Manuel Mendez, the Director of the Emergency Operations Centre, has assured families that nothing is being ruled out in the search.
Reflecting the tragedy’s scale, Dominican Republic President Luis Abinader declared three days of national mourning. Among the deceased are renowned figures, including the artist Pérez and two beloved former baseball players, Octavio Dotel and Tony Blanco, alongside a multitude of passionate music fans.
More than 300 rescue workers have tirelessly combed through the rubble for two days. However, as hopes fade for more survivors, attention turns to the inquiry into the cause of the disaster. Suspicion has arisen regarding a nightclub fire two years ago, with fears that it may have compromised structural integrity. Nightclub owner Antonio Espaillat extended his condolences to victims’ families and emphasized his cooperation with authorities regarding the incident.
Shailyn has learned of the fire’s implications and contemplates its significance. Yet, her focus remains on her younger stepsisters, who have been affected emotionally after discovering through peers that their parents were caught in the collapse. As Shailyn’s birthday approaches, she is confronted with overwhelming sorrow instead of celebration, caught in an agonizing wait for news about her loved ones amid a tragedy that has marked her nation’s history.
