"Before solar, we had to scramble for alternative means to power her oxygen tank," he recalls, highlighting challenges that almost cost her life.

The backdrop to this personal story is a national landscape marked by nearly 15 years of load-shedding, a tactic employed to manage an overstretched power grid, largely reliant on coal. Despite some improvements in electricity supply, many South Africans remain at the mercy of blackouts that endanger lives and stifle economic opportunities.

Moodley, however, benefited from a pay-as-you-go solar program, costing $60 monthly, which allows families without initial capital to transition to cleaner power sources. "This has given us peace of mind," he states, mentioning that savings on electricity are aimed at expanding his solar setup further.

Local start-up Wetility, established in 2019, has been instrumental in creating affordable solar solutions designed for lower-income households. According to Vincent Maposa, the company's founder, "Reliable electricity means more than access; it means the ability to live without fear of outages." The innovative financing model and lightweight panels have made solar adoption easier in communities plagued by theft and structural limitations.

For small business owners like Julius Koobetseng, who runs a grocery store in Krugersdorp, turning to solar has not only preserved his business amid erratic power supply but also propelled it forward. "Now, customers flock to my store because they know the lights are always on," he proudly states. The financial outlay, while significant at $250 per month, has translated into renewed business prospects and the freedom to plan.

As solar power becomes a viable alternative amid South Africa's energy woes, stories like those of Moodley and Koobetseng illustrate the vital role renewable energy can play in uplifting communities, reclaiming livelihoods, and ensuring that healthcare needs are met, regardless of the instability of traditional power sources.
