South African Congressman Defends Himself with Gun During Violent Attack
Bravery shines as South African MP fends off hijackers in Cape Town incident.
In a dramatic incident on Tuesday, prominent South African MP Ian Cameron fired shots in self-defense when he and two colleagues were ambushed by a gang in the township of Philippi. The trio was returning from a work visit when their vehicle was attacked, with assailants smashing the windows with bricks, causing injuries to Cameron and his fellow MP, Nicholas Gotsell. Cameron, left with broken teeth, retaliated by firing his weapon, hitting one of the attackers.
Local police quickly arrested two suspects, aged 16 and 18, in connection with the attempted hijacking and murder. One suspect sought treatment for injuries received during the encounter at a nearby hospital, while the other was apprehended on a farm. Authorities continue their search for a third accomplice.
Cameron, who leads the police committee in parliament, detailed the event to broadcaster Newzroom Afrika, explaining that the attack escalated rapidly after the first brick shattered the driver's side window and struck his face. He recognized the urgency of the situation as his colleagues were also under attack.
In South Africa, where gun ownership is legal with the necessary licensing, Cameron acted decisively in a moment of danger. In the aftermath, Gotsell commended Cameron's courageous actions, stating that he "acted with such bravery" amid the chaotic scene. All three MPs are affiliated with the Democratic Alliance (DA), the nation's second-largest political party, which decried the attack as indicative of the escalating crime crisis in the country.
